In one sentence

dB Ride is a decibel meter for driving: the app for Android and iOS measures the noise level in your car or under your motorcycle helmet and records your speed via GPS at the same time.

In one paragraph

dB Ride measures road noise in dB(A) or dB(C) and stores the GPS speed with every reading. Drivers, riders and RV owners don't just see how loud it is, but at what speed – ideal for before/after comparisons of tires, sound deadening or helmets. The app is completely free – no ads, no in-app purchases and no account.

Long version (about 150 words)

How loud is your car at 60 or 80 mph – and are the new tires really quieter? dB Ride answers these questions with readings instead of gut feeling. Made by eastfreak Studios in Dresden, Germany, the app measures the sound level in dB(A) or dB(C) and records speed and route via GPS at the same time. The “noise by speed” view shows the average level for each speed range, and the map shows the level at every point of the route. Several recordings can be compared side by side, for example summer vs. winter tires or before and after sound deadening. Since version 1.2, dB Ride uses its own measurement engine without automatic gain control and with real A/C weighting according to IEC 61672. Since version 1.3, dB Ride is completely free: no ads, no in-app purchases, no tracking. New are a 1/3-octave frequency analysis that shows, for example, whether wind or tire noise grows with speed, and pro tools such as a noise dosimeter and long-term measurement. Recordings stay on the device, and no account is needed.

Key features

  • Decibels and speed live: level in dB(A), dB(C) or dB(Z) – switchable right on the meter screen – and GPS speed on two gauges, with min, average (Leq) and max.
  • Noise by speed: average level per 20 km/h (or 10 mph) band for every drive – as a bar chart in the detail view and the share image.
  • Map: route with level and speed at every point.
  • Frequency analysis: live 1/3-octave spectrum from 25 Hz to 16 kHz, spectrogram and dominant frequency; in the analysis, “frequency by speed” (wind or tires?) and a before/after frequency comparison per octave band.
  • Compare & Battle Mode: up to 8 recordings side by side – with chart, difference in dB and comparison by speed range with average (Leq).
  • Share cards, CSV and PDF export: share results as an image, raw data as CSV, report as PDF.
  • Measurement: its own engine without automatic gain control, A/C/Z weighting per IEC 61672, Fast (125 ms) and Slow (1 s) time weighting, Leq averaging, pro values (LAF, LAS, LAeq, LAFmax/LAFmin, LCpeak, L10/L50/L90), clipping warning, calibration assistant with a reference meter (±30 dB) and device profiles per phone model.
  • Pro tools: noise dosimeter with dose, TWA / LEX,8h and time left per OSHA, NIOSH or EU 2003/10/EC; long-term measurement as a noise log with minute values, events and day/night analysis; level alarm; PDF reports. For guidance, not a standardised measurement.
  • On the road: spoken readouts; the measurement keeps running with the screen locked. No dialogs while driving, result right after saving.
  • Quick access: home screen widgets and quick settings tile (Android), app shortcuts via long-press on the icon.
  • Free & private: no ads, no in-app purchases, no tracking, no account, no cloud – recordings stay on the device.

Typical use cases

A note on accuracy

Honestly put:

dB Ride measures with the phone's built-in microphone. That is not a calibrated sound level meter: depending on the model, absolute readings can be off by several dB. For comparisons with the same phone in the same position – for example before and after changing tires – the readings are very meaningful. The app is not suitable for official measurements or expert reports. The same applies to the noise dosimeter and long-term measurement: they are for guidance and a memory aid, not a measurement to ISO 9612 or other standards.
