2. Principles of data processing
Your recordings stay on your device. dB Ride has no user account and no cloud. Readings, recorded routes and settings are not transmitted to eastfreak Studios.
The app was developed following the “privacy by design” principle. Some features do, however, use third-party services that require technically necessary data to be transmitted: the map display, place-name lookup, ads in the free version and purchase processing via the app stores. The following sections describe which data this involves.
3. Permissions and data processing in the app
3.1 Microphone
dB Ride needs access to your device's microphone to measure sound levels in real time. The audio data is used solely to calculate the dB level and is not stored, recorded or transmitted. No audio recordings are created.
3.2 Location / GPS
With your consent, dB Ride accesses your device's location. This is required for:
- determining speed and recording GPS routes during a measurement
- showing routes on the map (see 3.4)
- linking measurement points to geographic coordinates and showing place names (see 3.5)
Recorded GPS data is stored locally on the device and not transmitted to eastfreak Studios. For the map display and place names, coordinates are transmitted to the services named in 3.4 and 3.5. You can disable location access at any time in your device settings.
For recordings with the screen off, the app uses a foreground service on Android; a persistent notification is shown during that time. The app may ask for notification permission for this purpose.
3.3 Local data storage
dB Ride stores the following data locally on your device:
- recorded measurement data (dB values, speeds, timestamps)
- GPS coordinates and place names of recorded trips
- saved comparisons
- app settings (language, units, weighting, calibration offset, Premium status)
This data is stored in the app database (SQLite) and the operating system's settings storage (SharedPreferences / UserDefaults). You can delete single recordings in the app, remove all trips via Settings → “Delete all trips”, or delete all data by clearing the app data in your device settings or uninstalling the app. Depending on your device settings, local app data may be included in your system backup with Google or Apple; you control this in your device settings.
3.4 Map display (Google Maps)
To display maps and routes, the app uses Google Maps (Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC). When the map loads, your IP address, the map area shown (and thus the approximate location of the route) and technical device data are transmitted to Google. Google may also process this data in the USA. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in a working map display). More information: policies.google.com/privacy
3.5 Place names (reverse geocoding via Nominatim / OpenStreetMap)
To show the start and end of a recording as a readable address (e.g. “Main Street, Dresden”), the app sends the coordinates of the respective point to the Nominatim service of the OpenStreetMap Foundation (OSMF, St John’s Innovation Centre, Cowley Road, Cambridge, CB4 0WS, United Kingdom). Your IP address, the selected app language and an app identifier (user agent) are transmitted as well. The returned address is stored locally only. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. The European Commission has adopted an adequacy decision for the United Kingdom. More information: osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy
3.6 In-app purchases (Premium)
dB Ride offers optional Premium features as a one-time purchase. Processing is handled entirely by the respective app store (Google Play Store / Apple App Store). Payment and purchase data is processed exclusively by Google or Apple under their privacy policies. eastfreak Studios does not receive any payment information. The app only receives the information from the store whether a valid purchase exists and stores the Premium status locally. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of a contract).
3.7 Ads in the free version (Appodeal)
In the free version of dB Ride, ads are delivered via the ad mediation platform Appodeal and its partner ad networks. Appodeal selects from the offers of various ad networks; the networks involved may change. In particular, the following data is processed:
- your device's advertising ID (Android: Google advertising ID; iOS: IDFA, only if you allow tracking) and other device or app identifiers,
- approximate location (e.g. derived from the IP address),
- device information such as model, operating system and version, language setting, carrier or connection type,
- information about interactions with ads (e.g. impressions, clicks) and diagnostic data.
The purposes are delivering and, where applicable, personalising ads, measuring reach and performance, limiting ad frequency and preventing fraud. The data may also be transferred to ad partners outside the EU, in particular in the USA. The legal basis is your consent where required for personalised advertising (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), and otherwise our legitimate interest in financing the free app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
You can limit or reset the use of the advertising ID in your device settings (Android: Settings → Privacy → Ads; iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking). With Premium the app is ad-free; no more ads are loaded. More information: appodeal.com/privacy-policy
3.8 Version check
On start, the app requests a small file from dbride.de to inform you about available updates. As with any website request, your IP address is transmitted to our web host (see section 5). No measurement data is transmitted. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.
3.9 Sharing, export and app ratings
Share cards, CSV and PDF exports are created on your device and only handed to the app or storage location you choose. If the app asks you for a rating, this happens via the Google Play or Apple rating dialog; ratings are processed directly by the respective store.
4. Disclosure to third parties
We don't sell data and we don't pass on your recordings. Data only reaches the services named in section 3 (Google Maps, Nominatim/OSMF, Appodeal and its ad partners, Google Play / Apple App Store) and our web host (section 5), each to the extent described and under their own privacy policies. Where data is transferred to countries outside the EU, this is based on an adequacy decision (e.g. EU-US Data Privacy Framework) or appropriate safeguards such as the providers' standard contractual clauses.
5. This website (dbride.de)
This website uses no cookies, no tracking and no analytics tools and loads no external content (no external fonts, scripts, maps or videos). When you visit the website, our web host, STRATO AG, Otto-Ostrowski-Straße 7, 10249 Berlin, Germany, processes technically necessary data in server log files: IP address, date and time, requested page, amount of data transferred, referrer URL, and browser and operating system. This data is used for the secure and stable operation of the website, is not combined with other data and is stored by the host for a limited time only. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. External links (e.g. to Google Play or the App Store) are only loaded when you click them.
6. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access (Art. 15 GDPR)
- Rectification (Art. 16 GDPR)
- Erasure (Art. 17 GDPR)
- Restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR)
- Data portability (Art. 20 GDPR)
- Objection (Art. 21 GDPR) to processing based on legitimate interests
- Withdrawal of consent (Art. 7(3) GDPR) at any time with effect for the future, e.g. via your device's advertising or tracking settings
Since your recordings are stored locally on your device, you can view, export or delete them yourself at any time. For data processed by the third parties named above, you can also contact them directly. Requests to us: info@eastfreak.de
7. Data security
Your recordings remain locally on your device and are protected by your operating system's security mechanisms. eastfreak Studios has no access to data stored on your device. Connections to the services named above and to this website are encrypted (HTTPS).
8. Children
dB Ride is not specifically directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
9. Changes to this privacy policy
We may update this privacy policy as needed. The current version is always available on this page. The date of the last update is shown above.
